OF OSTRAVA

The city was founded in the 13th century as a small market town, and grew over time to become an important center of industry and trade in the region. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Ostrava experienced rapid growth and development, fueled by the discovery of coal and the subsequent expansion of mining and heavy industry in the area.

During World War II, Ostrava was occupied by Nazi Germany, and many of the city's residents were forced into forced labor or sent to concentration camps. After the war, the city underwent a period of reconstruction and development, as new industries were established and the city's infrastructure was modernized.

In the years following the fall of communism in 1989, Ostrava underwent significant economic and social changes, as many of the city's traditional industries declined and new sectors emerged.
